A mother in Rockford, Illinois, started noticing something wrong with her youngest son’s eye approximately two months ago. Julie Fitzgerald thought she saw something in the back of Avery’s eye when she looked at him in certain light.
Fitzgerald turned to the internet to try and find out what it might be, and read a story about a woman who took a photo of a relative and saw white in the pupil of the eye instead of red. The family member ended up having cancer. The story frightened her.
Fitzgerald expressed her concern to her husband Patrick, who didn’t think it was anything serious. So she took a photo of her son with her cell phone and his entire pupil appeared white in the image. She decided to take her son to a doctor as a precaution, where her worst fears were confirmed: her son had retinoblastoma, 75 percent of his eye was covered in tumors.
“He (the doctor) took one look and said there are multiple tumors,” said Fitzgerald.
Doctors told the family that the cancer could have spread to Avery’s brain and blood if they had waited any longer. His eye had to be removed, but it is believed that all the cancer was removed with it. He will eventually be fitted for a prosthetic eye.
Fitzgerald is just glad she acted on her gut feeling and took action when she did.
