Learn To Knit

Learn to cast on, how to make a basic knit stitch and cast off. Instruction is free, but participants should bring a skein of cotton yarn and a pair of size 10 knitting needles. All ages are welcome, but children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Register at the library by Thursday, May 14.

Library Tour

Did you know you could use a VHS to DVD converter or check out a portable die cut machine at the library? How about craft patterns or jigsaw puzzles? There are more than books at the library. New cardholders and those interested in learning more about the library are invited to a guided tour at 7 p.m. Monday, May 18.

In addition to discovering where to find current bestsellers, a favorite cookbook, or the daily news, participants will be introduced to many special services. These include the library’s makerspace, online catalog, eMedia, computers and copiers for use in the library; framed original art, CD’s, DVD’s, and many other materials for loan.

The library holds the tour the third Monday of every month and by appointment.

High School Equivalency Program

Success is at your fingertips when you enroll in the high school equivalency program offered by Horizon Education Alliance. HEA Adult Education helps prepare students to take their high school equivalency exam at the library. Anyone who is 16 years or older can be a part of the program, provided they are no longer in school. They offer free computer based instruction 27/7 that can either be done at regularly scheduled times at the library or at home.

All five subject areas of the HSE are covered in the curriculum, and coaches help students achieve the levels needed to pass the test. Students are very independent in the learning process; they pace themselves and determine how quickly they can take the test. In case you need face-to-face instruction, workshops are held throughout the year. We even offer a practice test to be sure you’re ready for the official exam.

Orientation sessions will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, May 18, Tuesday, May 19, Wednesday, May 20, Tuesday, May 26, and Wednesday, May 27. Students must attend a complete orientation cycle of 18 hours to be enrolled in the program. Once ready, students test at the Elkhart Area Career Center, in the Adult Basic Education office.

The cost of the test is $90, and scholarships are available. Begin your future now. Getting your HSE is the first step to reaching your career goals whatever they may be. Strengthen your reading, writing and math skills, but more than that, strengthen your confidence in yourself by getting an HSE. Call Theresa at (574) 215-7019 for more information. Success is at your fingertips.

Book Club

Read along with the Cover to Cover Book Club at the library. The club meets from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, to discuss “Madness Under the Royal Palms” by Laurence Leamer. This non-fiction title recounts the story involving a socialite determined to make it to the top of Palm Beach society, two infamous murders and a powerful society reporter. The cast includes trophy wives and husbands, gigolos, glamorous widows, a wild event planner, a sociopathic millionaire and other colorful characters. You can reserve a copy of the book at the library.

Crafting Hope

The library’s Crafting Hope group will meet from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, to make scarves for ladies at SPA women’s ministry homes in Elkhart. The crafting night is open to the public. A representative from the SPA houses will be on hand to tell crafters about the mission of the organization. If you are interested in joining the efforts and would like to know what to bring along, visit our website and click on the events calendar.

Crafting Hope meets quarterly to make simple projects for local and global organizations. Since 2011, the group has donated hundreds of clothing items, toys, bibs, blankets and more to help people around the world and across the street.
