Wawasee SportsThe offense was in high gear Saturday for the Wawasee softball team.

The Warriors outscored host East Noble 14-12 in non-conference action in Kendallville.

The two teams combined for 37 hits in the slugfest with the Warriors coming up with 21 of them.

Paige Hlutke led the way for Wawasee by going 4-5 at the plate with a pair of RBI.

Kylee Rostochak smacked a bases-loaded triple for the Warriors. Alissa Flores clubbed a two-run homer and also ended the game with an unassisted double play at second base.

Meghan Fretz notched the pitching win for the Warriors.

Wawasee, 12-2, plays a key Northern Lakes Conference game at Concord on Monday.

The Wawasee junior varsity team lost 12-9 and 12-11 at Angola Saturday. Nicole Streby had a home run in the 12-9 loss. She also had two hits and three RBI in the 12-11 final. The Warrior JV is now 6-6 on the season.

Girls Track Team Takes Fourth Place

The Wawasee girls track team turned in a strong effort Saturday to claim fourth place in the John Reed Relays held at East Noble.

Host East Noble scored 105.5 points to earn the team title.  Columbia City was second with 71, followed by DeKalb (64.5), Wawasee (56.5), Bellmon was secont (48), West Noble (47), Luers (34.5), Lakeland (27), Goshen (26), Norwell (25), Central Noble (25) and Prairie Heights (16).

Leigh-Ann Schrack had a big day for the Warriors. She placed second in the 100 in a time of 13.38. Schrack also teamed with Skylar Janda, Sarah Lancaster and Adrienne Gill on the second place 4 X 100 relay team in a time of 52.85. She also ran on the 4 X 200 relay team with Lancaster, Janda and Molly Swartz that placed fourth in a time of 1:52.19.

Katlyn Kennedy was third in the shot put with a throw of 37-9 1/2. Hannah Winters was third in the discus with a throw of 107-03.

Shelby Swartz took fourth in the 100 hurdles in a time of 16.62. The team of Delanie Bame, Aubrey Kuhn, Sarah Harden and Sanely Pizana was fourth in the 4 X 800 relay in 10:41.68. The team of Bame, Kuhn, Reagan Atwood and Elizabeth Zorn was fourth in the distance medley relay in a time of 12:22.75.

“The girls had an outstanding day,” said Wawasee coach Scott Lancaster. “We mixed up a lot of the relays between veterans and rookies and the girls responded very well. Hopefully, we can keep this momentum going and continue to progress.”

Wawasee will host Goshen and Plymouth Tuesday night in the final NLC regular season meet.

Cook Earns MVP Honors

Clayton Cook continued his stellar senior season Saturday in earning individual MVP honors for the Wawasee boys track team at the John Reed Relays at East Noble.

Cook won the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.13 and placed first in the long jump with a leap of 20-11. He also teamed with JJ Gilmer, Tyler Courter and Cole VanLue to win the 4 X 100 relay race in a time of 44.01.

The Warriors placed fourth in the meet with 68 points. Goshen won the team title with 103 points with DeKalb second with 90. Norwell was third with 77 points, followed by Wawasee, Luers (60), Lakeland (53), East Noble (50) and Columbia City (43).

The team of Cook, Gilmer, Courter and VanLue also placed second in the 4 X 200 relay race in 1:33.44.

Gilmer was second in the high jump as he cleared 6-6. He passed at a shot at first place to attempt to break the school record at 6-8 1/4, but just missed on it.

Courter was fourth in the 100 in 11.66 and Hunter Jones was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 44-02.

“The boys had a very good meet,” said Wawasee coach Scott Lancaster. “Clayton was chosen MVP by the coaches, Tyler did a great job sprinting and leading off our short sprint relays and JJ just missed the school record. It’s exciting to see many of our guys put forth this type of effort.”

Wawasee will host Goshen and Northridge Wednesday in the final regular season conference meet.
