It’s a busy time at the library next week with lots of interesting and fun events.
Due to a high level of interest among our patrons, we will once again offer our four class Beginning Genealogy Series, at 11 a.m. every Tuesday in May, starting May 5 and concluding May 26. Taught by local history and Genealogy Center Director Beth Smith, this four class series will show you how to get started researching your family history. The course is free, but pre-registration is required.
You can sign up at the Circulation Desk or call (574) 834-7122.
Later in the day at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, Scotland native Owen Flannigan will present a program on Scotland and the Gaelic language. Flannigan was born and raised in Scotland and currently lives in London, but returns to Scotland often to visit family and friends. He will be at the library to talk about his native Scotland and Gaelic language and culture. Many Americans can trace their ancestry to Scotland, but regardless of your lineage, you will find this informational presentation interesting.
As you pass by the National Weather Station on SR 13, have you ever wondered what goes on there? Now is your chance to find out. Join us on a tour of the local National Weather Station at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7. You will learn how weather is tracked, how warnings are issued, weather technology, and much more. We will leave from the library at 2:30 p.m. and travel by carpool to the Weather Station. The tour is free, but advance registration is required to attend. You can register for the tour at the circulation desk or call (574) 834-7122. Minors must be accompanied by a parent.
It will be an active week for the North Webster Hiking Club with two hikes planned. At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7, the group will leave from the library parking lot and travel by carpool to the Wildwood Nature Preserve near Silver Lake. The next morning at 7:30 a.m. Friday, May 8, the group will meet at the library to hike Richey Woods Nature Preserve in Whitley County, where we will meet up with the Fort Wayne Hiking Club and join them on the hike. Since we will travel by carpool, participants in each car are asked to share gas expenses. First time hikers must also sign a liability waiver form. Adults who enjoy nature and walking outdoors are welcome to join. More details are available at the library or by contacting adult services director Beth Smith at (574) 834-7122, ext. 205.
The popular make and take card class gathers at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 7. Sign up at the circulation desk. The $7 class fee includes all materials and supplies.
