Warsaw Ladies Fifth In Own Tennis Tourney

Warsaw SportsWARSAW – The Warsaw girls tennis team posted a fifth-place team finish in its own invitational on Saturday.

Penn totaled 22 points to earn the team title in the eight-team event. Munster was second with 19 points, followed by Elkhart Memorial (14), Fishers (13), Warsaw (10), Homestead (8), Valparaiso (8) and Merrillville (1).

The Warsaw No. 1 doubles team of Athena Schlitt and Ella Knight led the hosts. The duo earned a second place finish, losing to the Elkhart Memorial team of Taelor Gross and Corinn Whittaker 6-2, 6-1 in the finals.

Freshman Liza Lewis placed third at No. 2 singles for Warsaw.

Freshman Colette Smith took sixth place at No. 1 singles for the Tigers and classmate Grace Miller was sixth at No. 3 singles. The tandem of Camille Kerlin and Sydney Hartman was sixth at No. 2 doubles on the day for the Tigers.

Singles champions in the tourney were Nikki Meininger of Munster at No. 1, Taylia Brown of Penn at No. 2 and Kelli Canul of Munster at No. 3.

The duo of Lauren McCarthy and Emma Moon of Penn captured the No. 2 doubles title.

Warsaw. 0-2 on the season, will open Northern Lakes Conference play with a match at Plymouth on Tuesday evening.
