An exception and a variance were approved at Thursday night’s Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals meeting. A petition for National Oil and Gas Inc. was approved. The property is located at 1200 S. Huntington St.
A petition for an exception is to allow a temporary remediation trailer to be placed on a commercial tract of ground for five to seven years.
A gas leak in ground water occurred in 1998. The trailer will house equipment to conduct the clean up, said Alana Christlieb, of SES Advantage, an environmental consulting firm in Fort Wayne. The clean up is expected to last three to five years, or longer, with two years of ground water testing.
The exact location of the trailer was debated. A letter of remonstrance from M & D Properties stated, “It (the trailer) will be an eyesore.” The property is located next to a former restaurant that is vacant and for sale.
The board decided to allow the trailer to be located on the southeast corner of the property, 10 feet from the property line, behind Wilby’s gas station.
The next meeting is at 6 p.m. May 21, at Syracuse Town Hall.
