Wawasee SportsCity Walks Off On Softball

Late-inning heroics by an opponent did Wawasee in for a second day in a row. Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Wawasee gave up three runs, including a two-run walk-off homer to lose at Columbia City, 6-4, Tuesday night in varsity softball.

Bella Kreig got things going in the seventh with a homer to tie the game at four. After Alexis Waldek reached base, Morgan Bales provided the heroics with a bomb to give City the dramatic come-from-behind win.

The loss, Wawasee’s second in as many days, paired with Monday’s 3-2 loss at Fairfield that had Wawasee leading by a run in the sixth before giving up the lead. Wawasee is 3-2 this season.

Meghan Fretz took the loss, allowing seven hits and four walks but striking out nine. Brooke Sands allowed seven hits to Wawasee – two each to Danielle Gunkel and Paige Hlutke – but walked just one and survived a defensive performance that had City commit six errors on the night.

Wawasee’s JV also took a tough loss, falling 13-3 to Columbia City. The loss is the third in a row for the Lady Warriors.

Both teams look to rebound Friday at Manchester.

Warriors Beat The Warriors

The old phrase from the late, great Dean Smith went ‘you can’t go wrong in picking a sure thing’ meant a Warrior team would win Tuesday as Wawasee visited Westview on the girls tennis courts. The hosts were the better Warrior side, getting the best of Wawasee 4-1.

Chelsea Carolus had the lone win for Wawasee, going three sets before beating Reghan Heffner 6-2, 5-7, 7-6. The win keeps Carolus undefeated at 3-0 to open the season at three singles.

Wawasee had one other court go three sets, with Miranda Kresse defeating Jada Antonides 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 on the one singles court.

Two singles had Savannah Rang beat Nealy Thanasrivanitchai love and love. Westview overcame a pair of decent matchups to claim wins in doubles matches. At one, Tessa Zimmerly and Meghan Steider beat Charity Parker and Brooke Fick 6-2, 6-2 while Karyssa Davis and Lydia Rang upended Madison Cooper and Kabrea Rostochak 6-4, 6-3.

All six of the JV courts went to Westview, four via shutout.

Wawasee falls to 1-2 on the year and will play again Thursday at Goshen to open Northern Lakes Conference play.
