Wawasee SportsELKHART – A huge seven-run third inning by Wawasee overwhelmed Elkhart Central Thursday night. Wawasee would keep pouring it on to claim a 14-2 softball win over Central in six innings.

Every Wawasee hitter claimed at least one hit, and all but one had at least two hits, the Lady Warriors mashed 21 hits overall. Cristina DeLaFuente returned to the lineup after tweaking a leg injury Monday, and promptly legged out three doubles, scored twice and drove in two. Meghan Fretz, Hannah Haines and Paige Hlutke each had three hits and Amber Lemberg doubled twice and drove in four from the nine-spot in the order.

Lemberg moved to 2-0 on the season in the pitching circle, allowing just three hits over six innings, walking one and striking out four.

Emily Namisnak drove in both runs for Central, which scored a run in the first to cut Wawasee’s lead in half, but didn’t manage another run until the sixth. The Lady Warriors knocked Kelsey Cobb out of the circle in the third inning after the Central hurler allowed five runs on eight hits.

Wawasee moves to 3-0 with the win, averaging 12 runs per game in the three wins. Central, which lost to Concord 4-2 Wednesday, is 0-2 on the year. Wawasee will take the field again Monday, April 13, at Fairfield.

The Wawasee JV had its impressive 33-game winning streak snapped Thursday in a 12-5 loss at Elkhart Central. Statistics from the game were not provided. The win streak dated back to May 2013 when Wawasee won its last six games of the season, then went 25-0 last season and opened 2-0 this year.
