Welcome Back

The meeting room is open and has fresh paint. Several groups are meeting at the Syracuse Library this week. Story time is meeting at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 23, before leaving to tour New Market. Preschool age children and a parent are invited to see behind the doors at the grocery store. It is pretty amazing to see the equipment that is used to move food and sundries into the store.

The Doctor Who fans are finishing up Season three with an episode, Season three member created trivia, theme food and a game. Everyone is welcome to come for the evening from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 25.

Food from Fiction, adult book club, is having some catered-dish recipes from “Crunch Time” by Diane Mott Davidson. Davidson is credited with starting and maintaining the recipe/cooking genre with 17 books in the series. Davidson is from Evergreen, Colorado, where a surplus of murders keep her characters busy both catering and solving the cases. The meeting begins at 1 p.m. and is catered by a couple of members from the group. Drop-ins are welcome. Reach the Syracuse Library at (574) 457-3022 for questions about any programs.

Get in on the Big Read

The Kosciusko Literacy Foundation is sponsoring this year’s Community Book Read and connecting everyone to the national Big Read. The Syracuse Library has several events in April in conjuction with other county wide activities. “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury, can be borrowed without needing a library card by taking a copy from the yellow bin. A movie showing is scheduled along with an adult discussion and young adult discussion.

“Fahrenheit 451” has had a place in libraries for the last 65 years and has a similar place in science fiction literature as Orwell’s “1984.” Censorship has unfortunately remained a current topic, but interestingly, Bradbury also depicts a world that has become surprising familiar in many other details.
