Two teams took center stage for Midwest Xtreme Inc. on Friday evening. Team Jazz and Team Sunshine both made their debut performances during halftime of one of the NCCAA tournament basketball games being played at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center on the Grace College campus.

Team Sunshine is a new team for individuals of all ages with disabilities. The team currently has only four members that represent Warsaw Community Schools, but is hoping to attract more. “The cool thing about this division is there is no age limit. You can have people with wheelchairs, braces or walkers. You can have participants with any level of disability, anywhere from moderate to severe,” stated Midwest Xtreme founder and owner Tim Sammons, before continuing, “What we are trying to do is get the word out there to families of special needs children that this opportunity is here for them to have a good time and do something unique. We understand parents of children with disabilities are cautious about the programs they put their kids into, but we think this is a good fit.”

Sammons expressed that most of the program’s strength comes from the coaching, “The coaches work very hard, and I want to give them credit. This program would not be successful without the coaches.” Team Sunshine took the court first, performing a well-rehearsed routine. Team Jazz, which is made up of girls between the ages of 4 and 7, took the floor and performed following Team Sunshine.
