The public is invited to hear family historian Valerie Boggs’ presentation “DNA and Genetic Genealogy” at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 18. Boggs will share how she tested and used her DNA to trace her family roots and the role DNA plays in shaping family history. You will learn about the developing field of genetic genealogy and how it can help determine ancient ancestry. The program is free and open to everyone.
Have you had an interesting experience cleaning out the attic? Write a short essay about it and bring it to Writer’s Corner at 10 a.m. Monday, March 16, where we will be sharing our attic-cleaning compositions. If you like to write, or want to learn how, join Writer’s Corner on the third Monday each month. Participants are given a specific topic to write about each month. We never critique grammar or spelling. We just focus on encouraging each other and learning how to express ideas in writing.
At 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 16, R.E.A.D. (Read, Eat And Discuss) Book Club gathers to discuss “Plain Truth” by Jodi Picoult, a novel about a murder on an Amish farm. If you like, bring a snack to share to go along with the free coffee and lively discussion. The teens will gather at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, for some Teen Time Trivia. If you are in sixth grade through high school, bone up on your pop culture knowledge and have fun playing trivia with us.
The Cemetery Walk Essay Contest is still going on throughout March. Write an essay about a person buried in the North Webster Cemetery and include a brief history of that person’s life; then submit it to Local History and Genealogy Center Director Beth Smith by Tuesday, March 31. If your essay is selected, the person you wrote about will be portrayed in the library’s annual Cemetery Walk on Sunday, Sept. 13. If you need help, Smith will be glad to get you started. The winning essays will be announced at the National Library Celebration at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16.
If you have missed some of the Local History and Genealogy Center’s past programs, some of those presentations can be viewed online on the library’s website at www.nweb.lib.in.us. Just go to the Local History and Genealogy page and click on “Presentation Videos” on the right to select the program you want to view.
