ELKHART – A little more high school hoops history was made Friday night at historic North Side Gym.
Darrius Baker of Elkhart Memorial and Pete Smith of Northridge made sure of that.
Baker and Smith played postseason heroes for their respective teams as the Crimson Chargers and Raiders each claimed thrilling semifinal wins in the Class 4-A Elkhart Central Sectional.
Memorial (14-9) and Northridge (13-9), which both erased sizable fourth quarter deficits, will meet in the sectional finale Saturday night at 7:30. Northridge beat Memorial 56-50 in a Northern Lakes Conference game back on Jan. 24 at North Side Gym.
Baker hit a running jumper just inside the lane as time expired to lift Memorial past Concord 55-53.
Smith swished through a 3-pointer from about 23 feet to force overtime versus Goshen and the Raiders went on to win 51-44.
Memorial trailed defending champion Concord 46-38 with 4:30 to play. The Chargers stormed back and tied the game with 16 seconds to play as Cameron Maxwell hit three free throws. Filip Serwatka then missed a 3-pointer for Concord with six seconds to play and Memorial took a timeout with 4.1 ticks left, setting up Baker’s game winner.
Concord led 18-12 after the first quarter and 27-23 at halftime. The Minutemen were up 39-34 after the third period before extending their lead in the final frame.
The Minutemen, who finish at 7-17, were done in by 20 turnovers. Memorial had just five in the contest.
Dimitri Giger led Memorial with 20 points and eight rebounds. Maxwell had 14 points and Baker seven.
Senior standout Serwatka had 25 points for the Minutemen. Brett Austin scored 12 points and Brandon Emerick 11.
