A Michigan company has begun producing a bulletproof baseball cap that they hope will help save the lives of police officers who are shot in the head.
“We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from police officers because they can’t wear riot gear every day,” stated Tom Nardone of Bullet Safe. “This is a friendlier way of having some protection.”
The ball cap has a 5 ounce bullet proof panel that covers the forehead. The entire cap, panel included, weighs only 8 ounces. It is currently being tested for effectiveness.
The company has done some unofficial testing of its own at a gun range, using a 9 mm handgun and various vegetables and fruits. Bullets fired at the cap rebounded without penetrating. However, it would likely still leave a mark.
“Our early tests indicate that if you do get shot in the head wearing one of these, you are going to get a concussion,” said Nardone. “Is a concussion better than a bullet entering your skull? It seems like that’s definitely true.”
The cap is not yet on the market, but is expected to retail for approximately $129 when it becomes available. For more information, visit BulletSafe.com.
