INDIANAPOLIS – The awards and accolades keep coming for the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings. As part of the big week in the state tournament, Valley sophomore Anne Secrest was among those honored as the IBCA/Subway Player of the Week for District 1 for the week of Feb. 16-21.
Secrest averaged 19.7 points and 10.3 rebounds to propel the Tippecanoe Valley girls (24-2) to both sectional and regional crowns over the past week. The 6-0 center tallied 21 points, six rebounds and three blocks in a 62-36 win over Whitko in a weather-delayed sectional final.
She then produced 17 points, 12 rebounds and one block in a 50-41 overtime win over Muncie Central in a regional semifinal. Secrest concluded her week with 21 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks in a 47-45 overtime decision over Norwell for a regional crown. The wins in the regional gave Valley its first-ever regional title and have Valley currently holding the school record for wins in a season at 24.
Secrest and Tippecanoe Valley will play Rochester in the Warsaw Girls Basketball Semi-state this Saturday for a chance to play in the IHSAA Class 3-A state finals.
Among those nominated for the award for the week included area players Erin Clemens of Warsaw; Claire Cromer of Wabash; Grace Hales of Westview; Alexa Holland of Rochester; Darby Maggard of Fort Wayne Canterbury; Kaitlyn Marenyi of Penn; and Lexi Minix of Oregon-Davis.
Churubusco senior Paul Forman and Marquette Catholic senior Ryan Fazekas were co-recipients of the awards on the boys side. Forman averaged 31.3 points and 9.3 rebounds over three games to help Churubusco improve to 20-3. The 6-7 forward opened with 27 points and 12 rebounds in a 65-60 victory over Garrett. He followed with 35 points and 12 rebounds in a 76-69 setback to Fairfield.
The Bethel College recruit then totaled 32 points and seven rebounds in an 84-52 win over Whitko. For three games, Forman sank 30-of-52 shots, 12-of-19 3-pointers and 22-of-26 free throws.
The 6-8 Fazekas averaged 28.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in propelling Marquette Catholic (17-6) to a pair of triumphs. The Providence College signee poured in a gym-record 38 points with six rebounds and three assists in a 70-48 home victory over Whiting. Fazekas then tallied 18 points, four rebounds and five assists as the Blazers completed an undefeated Greater South Shore Conference season in a 75-51 win at Calumet. For two games, he was 23-of-38 from the field, 5-of-10 on 3s and 5-of-5 on free throws.
Other area nominees from District 1 included Josh Anders of Plymouth; Chandler Aspy of Westview; Devin Cannady of Mishawaka Marian; Dmitri Giger of Elkhart Memorial; Joe Line of Fairfield; and Filip Serwatka of Concord.
