WARSAW – It was only fitting that five players scored in double figures for the Warsaw boys basketball team in a conference win Tuesday night.

It was a fitting way for the Tigers, who have gotten contributions from everyone all season long, to wrap up an unbeaten league schedule.

That trend continued as Warsaw put an exclamation point on a league championship with a 60-47 victory over Northridge.

The Northern Lakes Conference finale, which was a make-up game from Jan. 8, saw the Tigers conclude a perfect run through league play at 7-0.

Warsaw, winners of their last five games, improves to 17-3 overall.

The NLC title is the first for the Tigers since the 2010-11 team went 6-1.

“I’m not completely surprised that we did it (going 7-0), but it’s hard to do,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle of the outright NLC championship. “You just have to have an appreciation for all the different players on this team who contributed to this accomplishment in a significant way.”

Sophomore Kyle Mangas led Warsaw with 13 points to go with six rebounds. Junior Paul Marandet and seniors Tim Swanson and Jake Mangas each scored 11 points and senior Rashaan Jackson had 10 and eight big rebounds.

Warsaw entered play Tuesday night with six players averaging between five and 12 points-per-game. Kyle Mangas leads the well-balanced offense at 12 ppg.

“It’s very fitting for us to have five players in double figures tonight,” Ogle remarked. “Our balance has been our calling card and our strength this season. Our team depth has truly been a difference maker as I hoped that it would be.”

The Raiders, who beat Warsaw 58-56 last year and won the NLC title at 7-0, led 13-10 after the opening period.

The Tigers used a series of runs all game long to take control. The hosts were up 23-18 after an 8-0 run in the second quarter. Warsaw then closed the opening half with a 10-0 run to lead 25-18 at halftime.

“We really rebounded great in that first half,” Ogle said. “That was the difference in the game. We did not shoot the ball well in the first half, but it was our determination to get offensive rebounds.”

Warsaw got an 8-0 run, courtesy of Swanson, in the third stanza to build a 37-27 advantage. Swanson swished through a pair of triples in the key stretch. The Raiders rallied to cut the lead to 39-35 at the end of the third period.

The Tigers, who went 2-5 in the NLC a year ago, were not to be denied. The hosts closed the game on a 9-0 run to seal the deal and league perfection.

“Our defense was pretty good tonight too,” stated Ogle. “They had to work.”

“I know our players are happy to finish it out at 7-0. It’s just a group that I enjoy coaching.”

Ogle pointed to a key road win at Plymouth last week as a big boost.

“The Plymouth win last week (42-38) was a really good win,” said Ogle. “Plymouth played really well that night and a lot of teams would have lost to them. And then they beat Penn tonight (56-46). That game should not be overlooked. It should be appreciated. It was a huge win for us.”

Warsaw shot 21-44 overall from the field, including 3-12 on threes. The Tigers were 15-18 from the line and had 11 turnovers.

Northridge, which drops to 10-8 overall and finishes at 4-3 in the NLC, was 17-36 for the game shooting. The Raiders, who had won three in a row and five of their last six games prior to Tuesday night, went 6-14 from 3-point range and 7-8 from the line with 15 turnovers.

Warsaw was huge on the glass with a 30-15 rebounding edge, including a key 13-3 on offensive rebounds.

Senior Nick Sands and junior Riley Rhoades each had two points for the Tigers.

Pete Smith and Tom Morrison each scored 13 points to pace the Raiders.

Warsaw won the junior varsity game 53-41. Braxton Minix had 16 points and Evan Schmidt 13 to lead the JV Tigers to the win.

Warsaw plays at No. 4 Carmel Saturday night. The Greyhounds, who won Class 4-A state titles in 2012 and 2013, are 17-2. The Tigers then host No. 10 Carroll (Allen County) On Feb. 27 in the regular-season finale. Carroll is 19-2.
