Who will the wait be worth it for?

That’s the question that will be answered Monday night for a trio of area prep girls basketball teams.

Sectional championships will be on the line at both Goshen and Wawasee come Monday night. The title games at both sites were two of plenty that were postponed Saturday night by the Blizzard-like conditions across the area giving both coaches and players two more days to wait.

It will also be a case of familiar foes meeting at both sites in title games.

Warsaw (14-10) meets host Goshen (11-12) at 7 p.m. Monday in the Class 4-A finale there.

The Tigers set a program record Friday night for fewest points allowed in a 38-9 semifinal win over Elkhart Central. The Blue Blazers finished with just four field goals, with their first basket not coming until the third quarter. Sophomores Madi Graham and Dayton Groninger led Warsaw with 18 and 10 points respectively Friday night.

Goshen turned in a thrilling win in Friday night’s second semifinal. Junior Tahya Bruce, who played at Warsaw last season, hit two free throws with 6.8 seconds left to lift the Redskins past Elkhart Memorial 40-39.

Warsaw beat Goshen 44-37 in a Northern Lakes Conference game at Warsaw back on Jan. 17. The Tigers used a 17-1 run in the third quarter, sparked by making five straight 3-pointers, to win the contest. Groninger scored 17 points and senior Vicki Harris 10 to pace the winners. Junior Olivia Love had 12 points and sophomore Aylissa Trosper 11 to lead Goshen.

Warsaw has won 16 sectional titles with the last coming in 2013. Goshen owns seven sectional crowns with the last coming in 1996.

The Warsaw-Goshen winner advances to the LaPorte Regional on Feb. 21. They will play either No. 9 Merrillville (18-7) or Valpariaso (14-10) in the second semifinal game. Merrillville plays Valpo Monday night in the title game of the Michigan City Sectional. The opener at LaPorte will feature No. 7 Lake Central (21-3) versus either No. 5 Penn (21-4) or Mishawaka (10-14). Penn plays Mishawaka Monday night in the sectional title game at Plymouth.

Tippecanoe Valley and Whitko, Three Rivers Conference rivals, will renew acquaintances at Wawasee Monday night in the Class 3-A sectional finale in Syracuse.

The No. 9 Vikings outlasted No. 10 and three-time defending sectional champion NorthWood 64-60 in double overtime in a thrilling semifinal clash Friday night. Sophomore star Anne Secrest had 27 points and 17 rebounds for Valley.

Whitko, despite being without star guard Brianna Cumberland, got past host Wawasee 37-33 Friday night. Sophomore Aly Reiff, Whitko’s top scorer, was outstanding Friday night as the star scored 12 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Wildcats. Whitko was without sophomore standout Cumberland, the team’s second-leading scorer at 14.9 points-per-game entering postseason play, who suffered a knee injury on Wednesday night versus West Noble in the sectional.

The Vikings, who have won eight in a row to improve to 21-2, beat Whitko 42-38 back on Dec. 20 in South Whitley. Secrest led the Vikings that night with 15 points. Reiff had 16 points and Cumberland eight for the host Wildcats.

Valley has won five sectional championships with the last coming in 2007. Whitko is looking for its first sectional title.

The Valley-Whitko winner moves on to the Class 3-A Bellmont Regional Feb. 21. They will play either Blackford (14-9) or Muncie Central (18-5) in the second semifinal game. Blackford plays Muncie Central Monday night in the sectional finale at Blackford.

The first semifinal game at Bellmont on Saturday will have Fort Wayne Concordia (19-7) taking on either Norwell (17-7) or No. 6 Columbia City (22-4). Norwell plays Columbia City Monday night in the Norwell Secitonal title tilt.
