INDIANAPOLIS – The Bethel College men’s basketball team remained undefeated on the road (15-0) earning a hard fought 68-66 victory over Marian University Saturday afternoon.

Clay  Yeo led four Pilots in double figures with 18 points to go along with two blocks and two steals. Matt Schauss added 17 points and nine rebounds while classmate Zach Miller contributed 16. Freshman Gage Ott came off the bench to chip in a career-high 10 points.

Bethel (22-4, 10-4) and Marian (16-10, 7-7) were nearly identical from the field both connecting on 43 percent from the floor and 33 percent from beyond the arc. MU would convert on 17-of-18 from the free throw line while Bethel shot just 73 percent on 19-of-26 tosses.

Miller and Yeo started out the contest hitting back-to-back triples followed later by a bucket from Ryan Wassink  to take an early 8-2 lead. The advantage would grow to double-digits (12-2) on a layup from Schauss at the 13:53 mark.

After a Marian timeout the Knights cut the lead in half (12-7), but the Pilots responded pushing the lead back to 10 (19-9) on a jumper from Miller midway through the half.

MU would rattle off six-straight to claw to within four (19-15) until Yeo  connected on back-to-back buckets including a triple to go up nine with 7:09 on the clock.

With the score 26-19 Bethel would go on a 7-0 spurt to claim their largest lead of the half at 14 (33-19) with three minutes left to play.

The Knights would slowly chip away at the deficit getting it into single-digits (35-26), but Miller would score BC’s next five points giving his squad a 38-28 advantage at the break.

The final act would see Bethel hop out to a 16-point lead (49-33) after another three-pointer from Miller with 15:14 remaining.

The lead would dip into single-digits just once as Bethel held onto a ten-point lead for the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Very similar to the last time Bethel and Marian faced off, the Knights would calmly climb back into the game. With 6:52 remaining and BC holding a 61-52 advantage the Knights scored six-straight to come to within just three (61-58) with 4:06 on the clock.

Miller would knock in a pair of free throws, but MU answered with a three-point play to make it a 65-64 ballgame with 2:14 left.

Down the stretch the Pilots would get a big defensive stop with 23 seconds left forcing the Knights to foul, but BC would go 1-of-2 from the line to still make it a one possession game.

Marian’s Dion Smith would get a bucket on an offensive rebound to make it 67-66 with 8.2 seconds left forcing MU to foul, but the Pilots again went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe for a slim 68-66.

The two-point lead would hold true as Bethel once again received a big defensive stop to claim the road win.

Caleb Begle and Dion Smith would lead Marian in scoring with 21 points, respectively.

Bethel returns home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. hosting Huntington University.
