Wawasee Sports LogoLaGRANGE – In a showdown involving all 10 of the teams in the Wawasee Gymnastics Sectional, it was Fort Wayne Carroll – the only full team not in the Wawasee Sectional – to claim victory Saturday with a 105.85 at the Lakeland Invitational.

The dress rehearsal event, exactly one month ahead of sectionals, showcased everyone at Wawasee which will go head-to-head. Except Carroll wasn’t playing along with the narrative, putting at least two gymnasts in the top eight of every event to showcase its own talent.

DeKalb were second at 104.875, Elkhart Central third at 96.7 and East Noble fourth at 95.7. Lakeland (95.4), Wawasee (94.525), West Noble (88.8), Angola (85.45), Plymouth (81.25) and Warsaw (76.7) completed the team listings. Morgan Township’s Kylee Maxwell competed as an individual and was far and away the top gymnast with a 37.025 all-around score while Westview’s Karyssa Davis also competed solo and scored a 31.9.

Maxwell, who figured into the state placings last year, showed she is a legit contender again this year with winning scores of 9.45 on vault, 9.4 on bars, 9.125 on beam and was fourth on floor at 9.05.

DeKalb’s Hayley Gibson won the floor with a total of 9.35 in what was another great show from the Lady Barons, defending Wawasee Sectional champions. Gibson added a sixth-place 9.05 on vault and twin sister Ryley Gibson was third on vault at 9.25. Caitlin Marlow added a 9.05, second-place score on beam and Kristin Russell posted an 8.75, fourth-place finish on bars to pace the Lady Barons.

Carroll had Jill Hoffman third on bars (8.85), Delaney Garland second on vault (9.3) and third on beam (8.975) and Sydney Ulrey third on floor (9.1) to pace the champions.

Leading Wawasee was Reagan Atwood on vault (9.0), bars (8.0), beam (7.6) and floor (8.75) to total a 33.35 all-around score, tenth overall in the invite. Taylor Busse also scored an 8.0 on bars and an 8.6 on vault.

Jazzmine Brown led Warsaw in scoring with a 32.1 all-around, buoyed by an 8.3 on vault, 7.6 on bars, 8.5 on beam (ninth overall), and 7.7 on floor. Katie Richard added a 7.65 for Warsaw.

“The meet didn’t go exactly how we wanted it to,” said Wawasee assistant coach Sarah Wegener. “However, some of the girls really stepped up today. We were able to see areas where we need to increase difficulty, and really work on execution. Even though we didn’t score as high as we wanted, we are so proud of these girls. They have every reason to hold their heads high and be proud of how they did today.”

Wawasee will next compete Thursday night at Elkhart Central while Warsaw hosts Plymouth Wednesday evening.
