ISU rare book 2Indiana State University has obtained a rare 15th century book, which will be displayed in the Cunningham Memorial Library’s Cordell Collection.

The book, entitled “Vocabularius incipiens teutonicum ante latinum,” was published by Johann Gruninger in 1495. It is considered one of the best-known examples of a German to Latin dictionary.

David Vancil, curator emeritus of the Cordell Collection, expressed that “Vocabularius” was an important book at the time it was published. It set precedents for organization and language. It is also a wonderful example of 15th century book-making, with hand-numbered pages, few blemishes and still having its original binding.

The Cordell Collection consists of dictionaries, philological texts and word books. It is open to the public, allowing people to see centuries-old printed artifacts.ISU rare book 3
