Treasures can come from the most unusual places. And today, countless beautiful products are made from recycled materials. Still, some brands consistently stand out from the crowd, like Polywood all weather furnishings.

The outdoor casual furniture manufacturer routinely surpasses the competition with finely crafted products that began life as milk cartons, plastic bags or soda bottles. Poly-Wood, Inc. has perfected the technique of recycling high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastics, blending them to fashion its extensive collection of tables and chairs.

Poly-Wood was founded in 1990 by high school friends who saw an opportunity in tougher federal recycling laws.

“Once we saw the government mandates for recycling, we had a vision to see this would lead to a game-changing material,” says Polywood co-founder Doug Rassi.

Polywood’s durable lumber is made from a proprietary mix of plastics that have exceptional weathering resistance. That is important for furniture designed to adorn back yards and home patios for at least 20 years.

Eco-Friendly Style That Lasts

Born in a Northern Indiana garage, Polywood has grown into an international brand sold by trusted retailers across the country. The brand has more than two dozen collections, ranging in style from the carefree and comfortable coastal look to a contemporary mod style. Polywood’s signature Adirondack chair was one of its first products; the traditional style remains a favorite, Rassi says.

Customers are attracted to the brand’s eco-conscious nature, but fall in love with the furniture’s sleek design and usability. Rassi leads a small team of in-house designers who focus on form as well as function.

“It’s a highly collaborative process, from the conceptual stage to the
build-out. It’s all in an effort to really connect with what our customers want,” Rassi says.

Commitment to the customer is extended throughout the buying process. Through an innovative lean manufacturing process, furniture shows up on buyers’ doorsteps 36 hours after it has left the facility.

Looking ahead, Poly-Wood is delving into taking its furniture’s lifestyle full circle, providing a way for customers to recycle Polywood furniture and give it new life.

“I would love to live in a world where we didn’t throw anything away,” Rassi says.
