Bethel’s Schauss Honored By League
MISHAWAKA – After a career-high performance on January 17 the Crossroads League announced Monday that Bethel College senior guard Matt Schauss has earned Player of the Week honors.
Players were selected for this award by their performances and contributions during the week of January 11-17.
Schauss, who earns his fourth Crossroads League weekly honor, scored a career-high 40 points to go along with 14 rebounds in a 104-78 victory over Mount Vernon (OH). Schauss became just the 11th player in Bethel history to reach the 40-point plateau with the most recent being Ryan Benner (2014) on December 30, 2013. The last time a Bethel player recorded 40 or more points in a home game was Jody Martinez (1990) on December 9, 1989 against Saint Francis (IN).
For the week, the 6-4 Greens Fork, Indiana native averaged 30 points, 13 rebounds, 5.5 assists and one steal guiding the No. 8 ranked Pilots to two consecutive wins. Schauss shot 61 percent from the field, 88 percent from the free throw line and a blistering 88 percent from three-point range. The Centerville High School grad started the week with 20 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in a 96-86 victory at Huntington University followed by his career performance against MVNU.
Schauss would also set a Bethel record for consecutive three-point field goals made (5-5) in a single-game as well as single-game three-point field goal percentage (100%).
In the past 20 games Schauss has reached a double-double in half of those contests.
His 9.5 rebounds per game currently tops the Crossroads League while ranking second in scoring with 21.3 points per outing.
Schauss and the Pilots will travel to Upland, Indiana to take on Taylor University on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
