Shirley Bobeck has served on the Syracuse Library Board as treasurer for 16 years. As treasurer she signed all the checks each month, often making special trips into the library during the month. She retired this December and both she and her husband Arlen are working on improving some health issues. The library will miss Bobeck’s enthusiastic support.

Knitting and Crocheting

Knitting and crocheting are traditional crafts using spun fibers. Today European countries continue many advanced traditions of working with yarn. A long-standing history can be observed in Ireland. Celtic fabric has been found on the Silk Road.

The potato famine of 1845 spawned a delicate crochet technique called Irish Crochet and it was a major export at that time. The Emerald Isles continue to be known for complicated knitted and woven woolens. Of course, with a craft that involves a basic skill such as knot-tying it is impossible to follow the complete history.

The library is continuing to offer two knitting or crocheting groups for beginners. Children and adults can work on projects at 4 p.m. every Thursday. Both parents and children that met in this group before Christmas had success and fun making simple items. Any interested child or adult is welcome to attend.

String Theory is back as a monthly meeting beginning in January. Adults and young people are invited to spend an hour and a half on a Saturday learning either knitting or crocheting. The next meeting is at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17.
