MIDDLEBURY – Score round two this season in the Warsaw vs. Plymouth boys tennis rivalry to the Pilgrims.
Plymouth topped the Tigers head-to-head in three championship matches Saturday en route to claiming the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament title at Northridge.
The Pilgrims, who beat Warsaw 4-1 in their regular-season meeting, won four of the five individual titles Saturday during the final day of the three-day tourney.
Plymouth finished with 57 points to win the tourney title. Warsaw, which had won the last two tourney championships, was runner-up with 43 points. Goshen was third with 41, followed by NorthWood (29), Concord (23), Northridge (15), Elkhart Memorial (10) and Wawasee (3).
The Pilgrims, who also win the overall league title this fall at 7-0, won championships Satuday at No. 1 and 2 singles and both doubles positions.
Warsaw and Plymouth are likely to meet again, barring a huge sectional upset this coming week, for a rematch in the semifinals of the Culver Academies Regional on Oct. 7. The Tigers beat the Pilgrims 3-2 in an intense regional final a year ago.
“I would love to see a rematch with Plymouth,” said Warsaw coach Rick Orban in a phone interview Saturday after the NLC Tournament. “They (Plymouth) played about as good as they could today. I give credit to coach Delp. They came out ready to go.”

Plymouth junior John Hunter overcame a big deficit in the final set to top Warsaw senior Sam Rice 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 for the No. 1 singles crown. Rice was up 3-0 in the third set before Hunter had to take a medical timeout. After the match was delayed for about 15 minutes, according to Orban, Rice went up 4-0. Hunter, who beat Rice 7-5, 6-2 during the regular season, then won the final six games.
“It was a great match,” Orban said. “Sam was on a roll and then play had to be stopped and that broke his momentum.”
Sophomore John Gerard of the Pilgrims beat senior Nic Jansen of the Tigers 6-1, 6-4 in the title tilt at No. 2 singles. Jansen, who was the top seed, won 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 earlier this season.
“Nic just had an off day,” said Orban. “Plymouth played a great match was today was better.”
The Plymouth No. 2 doubles duo of junior Brayden Davidson and sophomore Nick Felke topped sophomores David Homme and Justin Stout 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
“David and Justin played a great second set,” noted Orban. “I was very pleased with that. Plymouth was solid.”
Senior Caleb Ray of the Tigers beat Mitch Boyer of Concord 6-1, 6-4 to place third at No. 2 singles. The Warsaw No. 1 doubles team of junior Christopher Herendeen and senior Cole Baker lost to Logan and Zach Troyer of Goshen 6-1, 6-2 in their third place match.
“Caleb played really well today and did everything I asked him to do,” said Orban. “Our No. 1 doubles is struggling. It’s a confidence thing with them right now.”
Nate Perek was the lone Wawasee player to win on Saturday. Perek rallied to top Brett Wilson of Elkhart Memorial 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in the seventh place match at No. 2 singles.
Cal Heinisch of the Warriors lost to Evan Nix of NorthWood 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the fifth place match at No. 3 singles. Brendan Graber of Memorial topped Todd Hauser 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the seventh place match at No. 1 singles.
Both Wawasee doubles teams lost in straight sets Saturday in their seventh place matches. The duo of Jake Hutchinson and Nate Haines lost to Sam Hoover and Austin Schmidt of Northridge 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 and Braydon Fretz and Leonard Kline lost to Braden Fish and Spenser Jaenichean of Concord 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2.
Luke Rush of Goshen kept Plymouth from a clean sweep as he won the No. 3 singles title.
Rice earned a spot on the At Large All-NLC team picked by the coaches, while Jansen was honorable mention All-NLC.
Mike Delp of Plymouth was chosen as the NLC Coach of the Year.
Plymouth won the overall championship with Warsaw and Goshen tying for second place. NorthWood was fourth in the final overall league standings, followed by Concord, Northridge, Memorial and Wawasee.
Sectional play will be held this coming week with Wawasee and Warsaw both in the Warsaw Sectional. The sectional draw will be conducted Monday night. Plymouth will play in the Bremen Sectional.
