Can being a happier person affect my career or business success? Are there things I can do or stop doing to help make me happier? The answer to both of these questions is an absolute yes!
Being a happier person will determine your career or business success. When we are happy we are able to build better work and personal relationships. When we are happy, we are more productive in our work.
We all know what it’s like to have a bad day. We can’t get our minds off of what is making the day bad. We are distracted by the negative thoughts to the point we can’t focus on our work. We become forgetful and make mistakes. We forget to return a phone call or send an important email. We put the wrong part in the wrong place and need to go back and fix it. We don’t produce at a high level when we are not happy.
When we are having ‘one of those days,’ we don’t want to be around people. We disconnect or even hide from co-workers and customers. Even in this high tech world, interaction with people is critically important to our success. We need people to help us and we need to help them. We can’t go it alone.
What can we do, or stop doing, to become happier? Here are a few do’s and don’ts to make us happier.
Don’ts
- Don’t Have Stinkin’ Thinkin.’ Human nature seems drawn to negative thinking easier than positive thinking. You can’t control what happens many times, but you can always control what you think about.
- Don’t Say Yes To Everything. Saying yes to everything may make you feel good, but you will eventually pay the price. Spend your time and energy only doing things you should be doing. Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should be doing it. Get better at saying no.
- Don’t Have Drama. Jim Rohn says, ‘You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.’ You can’t completely get away from negative people, but limit your time with them. Instead, choose to spend the majority of your time with people who are positive and optimisitic.
Do’s
- Do Turn On The Dream Machine. Dream about and imagine your life being everything you want it to be. Spend at least an hour a week dreaming about how you want your work and personal life to look.
- Do Spend Time Outside. Many of us spend much of our time inside to do our work. Biologically, we need to spend time in the sun. Sunshine makes us happier. Try to spend at least 15-30 minutes outside each day no matter whether its work or play.
- Do Complete Small Tasks. Here is another biological need. Dopamine is a chemical released in our brains, which helps us feel happy and good. It is released when we accomplish a task, large or small. Large tasks may take days or weeks to complete, so do something small everyday to release dopamine. You can sweep the sidewalk, cut the grass, do the dishes, file paperwork, or clean off your desk.
Your level of happiness will determine your level of personal, work and business success. There are certainly many more dos and don’ts. What can you do, or don’t do to become happier?
