LEESBURG – A local golf outing received a boost from a former Purdue University standout this week.

New Beginnings Preschool and Child Care, Inc. held its annual golf scramble at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club on Monday afternoon and welcomed New York Giants quarterback Curtis Painter as its featured guest.

Painter played for Purdue from 2005-2008, starting 41 games for the Boilermakers. He started his professional career after being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts, playing with the team for three seasons. Painter had a brief stint with the Baltimore Ravens before ending up in New York.

Painter was described as a man of few words by his sister, Jaimi Andrew who is on the board of directors for New Beginnings, but the former Boiler did take a few minutes to talk about helping out.

“I’m just excited to be up here,” said Painter. “Other than to visit family, I don’t make it up here that often. But I’m happy to be here on such a nice afternoon to play some golf and to help a good cause and hopefully we can raise some money.”

The sunny afternoon did provide participants with a great setting for the outing and provided New Beginnings with more than $2,000 raised in funds that will go towards operations of the programs and children the center serves.

The foursome of Tim Hicks, Adam Leeper, Stephen Conrad and Brent Berkeypile took first place at the outing.

Hole sponsors for the event were The Papers, Inc., Lake City Bank, Knepp Sand and Gravel, Betterway Products, T-Zone, Crouse Body Shop, and Mutual Bank.
