Summer is the time for enjoying cool, crisp salads. Learn how to make delicious low calorie vinaigrette dressings at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 9, during the library’s weekly weight loss support program called Lose It @ The Library.

Professional chef, author and business owner Janie Ebinger will demonstrate how to make low calorie vinaigrettes. The group will make some in class and sample some on a salad. It will be a fun, informative and delicious time of learning healthy eating.

Then flip flop into summer as Linda McGonagle shows you how to make a cute summer wreath out of flip-flops at the Flip-Flop Wreath Workshop on 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10. Bring five pairs of same size, small or medium child size flip-flops to the workshop and the rest of the supplies will be provided for a $5 class fee. Your original flip-flop wreath will be perfect for your cottage door or patio. Registration is required to attend so sign up at the front desk, call 574-834-7122, or e-mail [email protected].

The North Webster Hiking Club leaves from the library at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 13, for Crooked Lake Nature Preserve located along the Noble-Whitley county line. The group will carpool to the nature preserve, sharing gas expenses. New hikers must sign a liability waiver and emergency medical form before commencing on the hike. Details are available at the library or by contacting Adult Services Director Beth Smith at 574-834-7122 ext. 205.

What do you do when you find a baby bird that has fallen out of the nest? Wildlife rehabiltator Maria Waltz will explain what to do at the “Found a Baby Bird – Now What?” Family Bird Program from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.Tuesday, June 10. She will bring along a live eastern screech owl for you to meet, some real nests to examine, and snacks to enjoy.

The program also includes a family craft and door prize. You must be registered to attend so sign up at the Youth Services Desk, call 574-834-7122 ext. 202, or e-mail the Youth Services Librarian Pam Long at [email protected]. Children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult.

Preschool Story Time begins its summer session earlier in the day from 10:30 a.m to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 10 with two time periods. Children ages 3-5 will have “Summer Science Fun” as they explore weather, colors, and senses through stories, finger plays, games, and crafts. Preschool Story Time will be held every Tuesday morning until July 22 (except for July 1). You can sign your child up by contacting the Youth Services Desk.

Then on Friday, June 13, learn about natural disasters at Friday Family Food and Fun with a choice of three time sessions available at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. Kids and their families will move through four stations of experiments, demonstration, crafts, and snacks. Advance registration is required to attend. Contact the Youth Services Desk to register your child.

The week concludes with the brand new LEGO® Club from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14. For ages 5-12, this monthly club will be held the second Saturday of each month. The library supplies the LEGOs while the kids bring the ideas for lots of building fun. Children under age 9 must bring a parent along.

It’s time to sign your child up for Summer Reading. We’ve got reading clubs for ages birth through high school with prizes, fun activities, and special events throughout the summer.
