An historic steam locomotive passed through Kosciusko County today catching many motorists and residents off guard. The restored Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive was headed to Elkhart for a private weekend event.
According to the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, the locomotive is at the Norfolk Southern railyard for the weekend offering rides to only Norfolk Southern employees. The event is part of the 21st Century Steam program. The program partners Norfolk Southern Corporation with Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society and schedules 18 excursions in seven states from April through July. Only a few events are open to the public.
On Saturday and Sunday, the train will leave the Elkhart rail yard at 11 a.m. It will pass through Goshen and Ligonier on its way to Bryan, Ohio. It will then return to Elkhart later in the afternoon both days. The public is invited to view the locomotive on its journey.
