A large crowd comprised of dignitaries and curious guests witnessed the official commencement of the Hawks Arts & Enterprise Center apartment project today by attending the LaCasa, Inc., and DJ Construction co-sponsored groundbreaking ceremony.

LaCasa, Inc., has contracted with DJ Construction Company, Inc., for the redevelopment of the Hawks Building, located at 215 W. Madison Street in Goshen, into 35 one and two bedroom live/work apartments for artists and entrepreneurs.

Other guests on hand at the event included Alan Rakowski from Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority; Angela Rohs from NeighborWorks America in Cincinnati; Chad Stoltzfus from Lake City Bank; and Goshen city Mayor Allan Kauffman.

Larry Gautsche, President of LaCasa, opened the ceremony by thanking all involved in the project throughout the many years.

“This is a first for LaCasa and I think it’s a first for the state of Indiana to utilize specialized live-work housing to promote economic development,” said Gautsche.

Bob Schrock, owner of DJ Construction, said, “It’s important to note the role that LaCasa has played in bringing resources to Goshen, not only to improve our buildings, but to improve the quality of life for those living in them. We’re delighted to be partners in this project.”

Mayor Kauffman reflected on the revitalization efforts of neighborhoods within the city of Goshen, particularly along the Millrace beginning at the Interra Credit Union building.

“Other mayors in the state of Indiana envy me because of what’s happening in Goshen,” he said.

After the groundbreaking ceremony, attendees toured the three-story building, noticing the original sturdy hardwood ceiling and beams as well as the views overlooking the Millrace Canal, waterfront, and bike trail.

The project is projected to be completed by mid-April, 2015.
