ELKHART – It was revenge and a reversal of regular-season fortunes Friday night in the Elkhart Sectional.

Concord and Goshen each earned a spot in the sectional title tilt with semifinal wins in the Class 4-A tournament at North Side Gym.

The Minutemen sidelined sectional favorite Northridge 67-62 and a surging Goshen squad took care of host Elkhart Central 61-55.

Concord (14-8) meets Goshen (13-9) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for the sectional championship and a spot in the Michigan City Regional March 15.

The Minutemen defeated Goshen 58-37 in a Northern Lakes Conference contest back on Jan. 10.

Concord used a balanced attack to hold off the Raiders in a closely-contested semifinal clash. The Minutemen, who lost 62-59 to Northridge in a Northern Lakes Conference game on Feb. 13, led 18-17 after the opening period and 33-27 at intermission.

Filip Serwatka led the way to the win for coach Steve Austin’s squad. The 6-6 junior center popped in 22 points. Senior guard Ramon Johnson netted 18 points and classmate Adam Glanders 11 for the winners.

Senior star Nate Richie poured in 29 points to keep the Raiders in the contest. Junior Pete Smith added 10 points for Northridge.

The Raiders, who had won eight in a row prior to Friday night, finish the season at 18-3. Northridge’s only regular-season losses were both to Penn.

It was the free throw line that proved to be valuable to Goshen in its win Friday night.

The Redskins hit 30-36 from the stripe, while the Blue Blazers were just 5-7.

Central, which had defeated Goshen 52-47 on Dec. 7, led 20-18 after the first quarter Friday night. The Redskins took control with a 15-3 surge in the second period of play to lead 33-23 at halftime.

Junior Austin Woolett pumoped in 25 points to lead Goshen, which has won nine of its last 10 games, to the win. Sophomore Brady Bechtel tallied 16 points and hit 14-16 free throws for coach Brian Bechtel’s club.

Senior Derald Gary scored 13 points and junior Treyton Harris had 12 to pace Central.  The Blue Blazers finish the season at 5-16.

Central played in the second semifinal game Friday night just hours after learning that head coach Troy Noble had resigned. Noble, citing “family matters”, turned in his resignation Friday afternoon to Central officials.

Noble, who did not coach Central in its final two regular-season games, was in his second season.  The Blue Blazers were 6-15 last season.

Central assistant coach Scott Sassaman served as interim head coach for the Blue Blazers Friday night.
