A sweet, sugary snack may pack a rather unsavory surprise for some. Indiana health officials have said packages of original Skittles sold at a store in eastern Indiana caused two individuals to be hospitalized for treatment of burning throats, cramping and diarrhea.
According to WSBT, State Health Department spokeswoman Amy Reel said the contaminated candy, which was sold at a store in Richmond, contained “unconfirmed chemical substances.” According to Reel, investigators do not know at this time whether the package of candy was tampered with. More information is expected to be released following laboratory testing in a few days. A spokesperson from Skittles reportedly stated the company is looking into the incident as well.
Authorities are requesting that those who purchased Skittles with the lot numbers 08JUL14 023 or 01DEC14 023 do not eat the candy and instead give the candy to Indiana State Police.
