Special Activities Over the Holidays
Members of the Children’s Book Club from the Syracuse Library met Jan. 14. They had an unbirthday to include everyone, with pizza and cake. The latest craze is to make rubber band bracelets, so they made many intricate designs. Next month the club is going to Hawaii for a luau and other tropical adventures.
Baking Recipes Wanted
January is the month when adults are offered a chance to win baking scented candles during the Like a Hug reading program. The Syracuse Library is also collecting favorite baking recipes to share at the conclusion of the program. Anyone with a tried-and-true, unique or a just too-good-to-not share recipe is invited to drop it off at the library. Registration is requested for those who want a copy of the recipes. The recipes will be collected until the first week of February.
Book discussion is Of Mice and Men
Fans of John Steinbeck or people having cabin fever are invited to the Syracuse Public Library for a discussion of the Annual Community Book Read’s choice, Of Mice and Men. Kosciusko Literacy Services has placed yellow bins in libraries and locations in the county with copies of the book to take, read and return, so that many may have the pleasure of reading. The adult book club, One Book, One Hour, is meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12, so there is still time to read the book.
The book was made into a movie with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich portraying brothers who go from job to job while looking for a way to settle into a quiet life. Malkovich has been haunted by his convincing role as the strong and retarded man, Lennie. Steinbeck sets the action in depression era California where he shows the tragic way that class differences become reinforced. The story unfolds in a quick one hundred pages and is quite a tale of good intentions. Of Mice and Men was written fairly early in Steinbeck’s career, but has a contemporary feel to this day. The plot is revealed in dialog where the scenes spiral into an irreversible outcome.
