SYRACUSE – With all the buzz surrounding the girls meet going on simultaneously Saturday morning at the Wawasee Natatorium, the Wawasee boys were able to swim with less pressure. That feeling found Wawasee on the winning end of nine events and a somewhat surprising 107-79 romp of Goshen.

On the strength of winning all three relays as well as sweeping the 50 freestyle, Wawasee put together quite a show of its own. A limited but mixed set of performers all had a say in the matter for the Warriors, which evened its Northern Lakes Conference mark at 3-3 with the 28-point triumph.
The usual suspects had their big days, including Zac Hershberger in the 50 (24.08) and 100 (52.73) freestyles, Logan Brugh in the 200 free (1:56.94) and 500 free (5:05.83) and Mason Germonprez in the breaststroke (1:08.31) and individual medley (2:15.36).
Germonprez, Brugh, Hershberger and Danny Allen all worked together to post a 1:51.88 win in the medley relay. Brugh, Hershberger, Logan Haessig and Caige Wahlgren closed out the meet with a 3:47.38 win in the 400 free relay and Germonprez, Haessig, Walhgren and Jaxon Bame put together a 1:45.45 take in the 200 free relay.
Not bad for a roster swimming just 12 boys and not having a dual meet since Dec. 19.

“I am really proud of the boys,” Wawasee head coach Julie Robinson said. “You could just feel the attitude was different, it was a completely different team than what we’ve shown at times this year. One race at a time, they were knocking them down.”
Robinson was as taken by the work her second-lane swimmers were able to do in building depth points against Goshen. Wahlgren used a late touch to beat Hank Miller to the wall by .12 at 2:04.14 in the 200 free. Haessig put together a nice 2:18.46 for second place in the IM and Owen Donahoe left the pool with a huge smile on his face with a sub-six in the 500 (5:59.40) and then setting a lifetime-best 1:16.27 in the breaststroke.
Wawasee’s sweep of the 50 free had Jaxon Bame swim a lifetime-best 26.08 and Ethan Knepp in the same event outtouched Ben Sommers at the wall for an extra team point.
“I think you saw two different things coming out of Christmas training, where some swam really well and some showed quite a bit of fatigue,” offered Robinson. “There were some that had tired legs and it wasn’t the best showing for some. But that’s where I want them to be right now heading into the next part of our season.”

Goshen didn’t have much to celebrate after posting a one-two-three in diving. Jacob Isnogle and Hudson Kay were the clear-cut top of the fleet with scores of 211.40 and 210.15, respectively. Ian Shreiner-Barger had no trouble taking the backstroke (1:03.86) and Hank Miller was surprisingly swift in the outside lane of the butterfly, going 59.69 without any real competition.
The Redskins, swimming its third meet in four days following the winter delays, fall to 3-8 overall and 2-5 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Head coach Steve Guipe was concerned about the recent workload, and saw its results unfold unceremoniously.
“Meets were shuffled around because of the weather, and I really worried about having tired legs out there, and we looked really flat,” Guipe said.
Wawasee close up its NLC plate Monday welcoming in Northridge. Meet starts with diving at 4:45 p.m. and swimming at approximately 6 p.m. at the Wawasee Natatorium.
