Indiana State Police have released information on the 10 a.m. Dec. 13 crash at the Old Leesburg Mill.

The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck, Mark Archer, 52, Leesburg, died later that day. However, his death was not due to the accident.

Archer’s truck was eastbound on VanBuren Street, continued across the railroad tracks and struck an ornamental Amish buggy before colliding with the Old Leesburg Mill, on Old SR 15.

According to Indiana State Police Archer told police he blacked out prior to his truck crashing into the building. He sustained very minor injuries as a result of the crash. However, he was transported to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, at his request for further examination.

It was determined he had suffered a had a heart attack and underwent emergency surgery. Unfortunately the surgery was unsuccessful.

Authorities report it was determined that Archer had suffered a heart attack prior to the crash, which caused him to lose consciousness.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office conducted a death investigation following the emergency surgery. That office has determined the cause of death was complications stemming from the heart attack and not as a result of the crash.
