Joseph E. Roose, 27, of Wabash, was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital late Monday after he was struck while riding his bicycle on a county road. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene.

The hit and run was reported at 9:14 p.m. Monday in the 1000 block of CR 300 North, Warsaw, near Madison Elementary School. The Kosciusko County F.A.C.T. team is investigating the crash and said Roose was riding his bicycle eastbound when he was struck from behind.

Police at this time have little information on the suspect vehicle, which failed to stop at the scene. Roose was able to give police a statement saying he looked back and saw a vehicle approaching. He was then struck and thrown into a ditch. He was not able to give a clear description of the vehicle. Police said his bicycle did have reflectors on both the front and back.

Despite his injuries, Roose was able to call 911. When police and medics arrived, they noticed obvious injuries to his left shoulder and chest. Roose suffered a collapsed lung and was airlifted from Kosciusko Community Hospital in serious condition. According to a family friend, he also suffered broken ribs and a broken leg and is undergoing further medical testing.

Sgt. Chad Hill of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department said it appears Roose will make a full recovery from his injuries.

The F.A.C.T. team is asking that anyone with information on the hit and run to call them at 574-265-2218 or 574-267-5667.
