Lady Warriors Can’t Solve NECC, Lose To Prairie Heights
SYRACUSE – Wawasee may be happy it didn’t look to join the Northeast Corner Conference during the hubbub of conference jostling last spring.
Facing another NECC opponent Saturday afternoon, the Wawasee girls basketball team suffered its fourth loss to the conference in a 59-46 decision to visiting Prairie Heights. Wawasee lost by 23 to Fairfield the night before and lost to Lakeland and Westview each for the first time since 2004 earlier this season.
Prairie Heights, earning its first win against Wawasee since the 1985-86 season, did so with the one-two combo of guard Shawna Carbone, who scored 16 points, and post Tressa Terry, who netted 14 points. Haley Kleeberg and Saige Dunafin added nine points each while McKenzie Kain tossed in eight points in the win.
With the victory, the Lady Panthers move to 3-3 on the season.
Wawasee had 20 points from Kylee Rostochak and eight points from Aubrey Schmeltz. The Lady Warriors held a 10-6 lead after the first quarter, but were outscored 21-11 in the second stanza and fell behind 43-31 after three played.
The Wawasee JV earned a 30-23 win over Central Noble to even its mark at 2-2 on the year.
Wawasee (1-4) will have one final crack at the NECC when it travels to West Noble Tuesday night.
