FORT WAYNE – The Warsaw girls basketball team improved its offensive output Tuesday night.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, though, it was not enough to collect a road win.
Fort Wayne Luers built a big lead early in topping the Tigers 45-36 in non-conference action.
The host Knights led 15-6 after the opening stanza and 25-12 at halftime of the contest. Luers’ largest lead came at 37-17 in the third quarter.
Warsaw, which lost 37-26 at Huntington North Saturday night in its season opener, shot just 15-46 from the field in the loss. The Tigers were only 1-12 from 3-point range Tuesday night and also had 20 turnovers.
Senior standout Nikki Grose, one of two starters back from last year’s 24-2 team, turned in a strong outing to lead Warsaw. The 6-0 center shot 8-12 from the field in scoring a game-high 18 points. Grose also led all rebounders with 11 caroms.
Pam Miller and Brooklyn Harrison each had six points for Warsaw, now 0-2 on the young season. Kilee Slone, Jodie Carlson and Erin Clemens each added two points for the Tigers.
Warsaw, with a young and inexperienced team, plays seven of its first nine games on the road.
Addie Reimbold netted 13 points and Shayla Sutorius added 10 to lead Luers to the win. Each player also had eight rebounds for the Knights, who improve to 2-1.
Luers shot 19-54 overall from the field, including 4-10 from distance in the win. The Knights had 15 turnovers in the contest.
Warsaw won the junior varsity contest Tuesday night by a 31-28 final to improve to 2-0. Dayton Groninger led the way for the winners with 17 points.
Warsaw plays at Tippecanoe Valley (1-0) Friday night. The Tigers then host Whitko in their home opener on Nov. 29. Luers plays at Indianapolis Brebeuf Saturday.
