Poyner Concludes Cross Country Campaign

Unknown-4Jake Poyner put the finishing touch on a strong cross country season Saturday.

Poyner, a freshman at Wake Forest University, competed in the NCAA Southeast Regional held in Earlysville, Virginia.

Poyner, a former standout in both cross country and track at Warsaw, finished 94th overall in the field of 239 runners. He covered the 10K course in a time of 31:14.7 for the Demon Deacons and was the third runner for Wake to cross the finish line.

Wake Forest finished in 17th place in the field of 35 teams with a team score of 487.

Junior Connor Crowley led Wake by placing 45th overall in a time of 30:29.7. Senior Alexander Rose was 61st in a time of 30:45.1 for the Demon Deacons.

Poyner helped the Warsaw cross country team place fourth at the State Finals in 2012. He then led the Tiger track team to a fifth place finish at the State Finals this past June.

Paul Chelimo of UNC-Greensboro won the men’s race Saturday in a top time of 28:37.3.

Eastern Kentucky captured the team championship with a score of 58. Virginia was runner-up with a score of 96. Both schools earn a spot in the NCAA Championships Nov. 23 in Terre Haute.

Poyner will now set his sights on the indoor track season. Wake Forest hosts the JDL College Kick-Off Classic Dec. 7. The team then hosts the Wake Forest Invitational Jan. 11. The outdoor track season begins March 14-15 at the CCU Invitational in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
