A former Mentone woman was killed early Wednesday morning after a tree fell on her  Gainseville, Fla., home, where she recently moved.

According to authorities, Dawn M. Ewing, 42, was asleep inside her home with her boyfriend, Michael L Braton, 40, when an enormous oak tree toppled onto the home at 2:02 a.m. crushing both individuals.

Though both were pinned under the tree, The Gainesville Sun reported officials managed to rescue Braton. He was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital for emergency surgery, Forgey said. He remained hospitalized late Wednesday evening.

Ewing’s three children, ages 5, 9 and 12, were in a different part of the home and were not injured, he said. According to authorities, all three children are staying with a friend of the family for the time being.
