On Friday, 40 local constituents gathered outside Rep. Jackie Walorski’s (R-IN) Mishawaka office to demand she vote to end the government shutdown with a clean bill to fund the government. The event was led by local members of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and joined by local members of Democracy For America, MoveOn.org and CREDO.
Speakers included Jeremy Bernstein from northern Indiana chapter of Americans for Democratic Action, Joe Carbone from Jobs with Justice, and local constituent and disability recipient Lori Silverman.
“Americans want an end to the shutdown – and no ‘deal’ that is rigged against the American people, such as cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits,” said PCCC Campaign Director Kimberly Fountain. “If Jackie Walorski decides to adhere to party rigidity instead of standing with her constituents on this crucial issue, she can be sure her constituents will not forget this moment on election day in 2014.”
A recent poll conducted by the Associated Press shows that 62 percent of voters blame Republicans for the government shutdown. Polls also show 68 percent of Americans say the shutdown is a major problem, including majorities of Republicans, Democrats and Independents.
Recent polling by Public Policy Polling, on behalf of MoveOn.org, showed that the government shutdown was a major liability for Republicans across the country, setting up the potential for Democrats to re-take the House of Representatives in 2014.
Last week, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee launched a series of ads targeting Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican House Speaker John Boehner for failing to avert a shutdown that affects millions of Americans. The online ads have already been viewed over 5,000,000 times.
The PCCC has over 10,900 members in Indiana and nearly 1 million nationally.
