ROCHESTER – Tippecanoe Valley football coach Jeff Shriver said earlier this week that standouts Ben Shriver and Tanner Andrews were both healthy and feeling good.
The prolific pair sure put the hurt on Rochester Friday night.
The connection of quarterback Shriver to receiver Andrews led the way as the Vikings posted a huge 42-21 win over the host Zebras in a key Three Rivers Conference clash of rivals.
Senior stars Shriver and Andrews had the winning connection all night long in the must win league game for the Vikings. Valley, which maintains possession of The Bell trophy, has shared the TRC championship each of the past two seasons with Rochester.
Shriver fired three touchdown passes to Andrews as Valley won its third straight game. Shriver hit Andrews with scoring strikes of four, 34 and six yards in the victory.
Shriver, a three-year starter who suffered a knee injury earlier this season, entered the game as the top passer in the TRC with 1,431 yards through the air and 12 touchdowns. Andrews, a Division I prospect, led the TRC entering play Friday night with 30 receptions for 671 yards and five scores.
Valley led 14-7 after the opening period and 28-7 at halftime in beating the Zebras for the third straight year. It’s the first time the Vikings own three straight wins over their rivals since a stretch from 1994-97.
The win makes the Vikings 4-3 overall on the season, but more importantly 4-1 in the TRC. Rochester falls to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Valley entered play Friday night as the highest scoring team in the TRC, averaging 47 points-per-game in league play. Rochester boasted the top defense, only allowing eight points-per-game in TRC action.
Something had to give and it was the Rochester defense.
The Vikings threw for 184 yards and rushed for 189 in a balanced offensive attack in the win.
The trio of Chris Torpy, Nolan Sponseller and Garrett Bell each had a short touchdown run for the Vikings.
Senior standout Sponseller had a huge night for the Vikings. He rushed for 84 yards on just 10 carries and also had a pair of interceptions and two fumble recoveries on defense.
Jacob Howdeshell led Rochester with touchdown runs of six and 15 yards to go with a six-yard reception for another score.
Valley hosts North Miami and Rochester plays at Whitko in TRC games next Friday night.
Whitko leads the TRC at 5-0 after a 49-35 league win at North Miami Friday night. The Wildcats, who have won five straight games since an 0-2 start, hosts Rochester next Friday night and then Valley Oct. 18 in the regular-season finale.
