The food pantry at Combined Community Services in Warsaw got a much-needed supply of over 12,000 pounds of food donations today. The non-perishable items were collected by students of Lakeland Christian Academy in Winona Lake.
Each year the LCA students organize the food drive to benefit the CCS food pantry. According to Carmen Flores, guidance counselor at LCA, last year’s donations also totaled 11,000 pounds of non-perishable goods.
On Monday, the students left paper bags, donated by Owen’s Supermarket, at 4,000 homes in Warsaw and Winona Lake. This morning the students, along with about 20 LCA staff members and 10 parents, then went back to those homes and collected the bags, that were filled with donations. Utilizing two box trucks, donated by Reinholt’s Town Square Furniture and Brouwer’s Furniture, the collections were taken back to CCS where the students sorted them according to type and then stocked the food pantry shelves.
The CCS food pantry is serving an average of 600 families per month and provides more than just food and USDA Commodities. When donations allow, CCS is able to offer other items to clients as well. Those items can include paper products, hygiene products and cleaning supplies.
Monetary donations are also accepted for the food pantry. Monetary donation allow the CCS staff to purchase food at local groceries and from the Northern Indiana Food Bank. Donations for food can also be made in the CCS name at the Food Bank in South Bend. Designated donations to the food bank will be put into the CCS account. The Food Bank of Northern Indiana also delivers USDA Commodities to our Emergency Food Pantry.
