FORT WAYNE – A pair of first-half goals netted the Warsaw girls soccer team another win Monday night.
The Tigers blanked host Fort Wayne Snider 2-0 in a non-conference matchup.
Standout Brooklyn Jackson, Warsaw’s top scorer, continued her impressive season. Jackson scored to put the Tigers up 1-0 in the 23rd minute on a free kick from about 30 yards out.
Warsaw doubled its advantage to 2-0 in the 29th minute. Elizabeth VanWormer netted the second score off an assist from Danielle Hutcherson.
“Snider is a very gifted team that has a lot of positive things going for them,” said Warsaw coach Peter Lucht. “They attack with conviction and synergy, and are very dangerous a whole.
“Snider came out with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. However, we were able to weather the storm, and once Brooklyn opened the scoresheet with her free kick in the 23rd minute, we were able to play the game a little more on our terms.”
Warsaw star keeper Abby Schue registered another shutout in goal for the winners. Schue, who will play at Grace College next year, had five saves in the victory.
Warsaw, which improves to 7-2-2 overall, outshot Snider 10-6 in the win.
The Tigers have been on quite the roll the last three weeks. Warsaw has now win five straight matches since a 0-0 draw at Northern Lakes Conference foe Goshen back on Sept. 3. The Tigers have outscored their last five foes 14-1 in the winning streak with the defense and star goalie Schue registering four shutouts.
“We had some courageous defending and relentless work ethic up in the midfield and up top,” remarked Lucht. “I am very proud of the girls for traveling to Snider and earning a hard fought victory against a great team.
“Our thoughts and prayers go towards Breck Jackson as she suffered an injury with two minutes remaining. Hopefully it will turn out to be nothing more than a hard knock.”
Lucht cited the play of Jackson, VanWormer, Hutcherson, Schue, Zoe Smyth and Rachel McClelland in the victory.
Snider won the junior varsity contest 1-0.
Warsaw plays at Manchester Thursday and travels to Syracuse on Saturday to face Wawasee in conference play. The Tigers are 3-1-1 in Northern Lakes Conference action.
