MICHIGAN CITY – The Warsaw volleyball team turned in quite the impressive effort Saturday in the Michigan City Invitational.

Coach Mike Howard’s Tigers earned a runner-up finish in the event with three impressive wins in four matches.

Mishawaka topped Warsaw 25-21, 25-19 in the championship match.

The Tigers went 3-0 in pool play with three victories against quality opponents.

Warsaw defeated Fort Wayne Concordia, which is ranked No. 7 in Class 3-A, 26-24, 26-24. The Tigers also beat Valparaiso 25-20, 26-24 and conference rival Elkhart Memorial 26-24, 25-19.  Memorial had beaten the Tigers 3-1 in a Northern Lakes Conference match at Warsaw back on Aug. 29.

The outstanding play of the trio of Katie Voelz, Emily Poe and Laura Craig led the way for Warsaw. Junior Voelz, a middle blocker, and seniors Poe and Craig, both outside hitters, earned All-Tournament team honors for the Tigers.

Voelz powered down a total of 31 kills on the day to lead the offense. Poe slammed 26 and Craig had 25. Poe also served up nine aces on the day.

Craig also led the Tigers with 33 digs on the day and Poe had 31. Junior Megan Chauncey had 51 assists and a nine aces, while freshman Cassie Hoag had 41 assists.

Voelz also paced her team with seven blocks. Sophomore Jordyn Lideman had two blocks.

Warsaw improves to 11-5 on the season.

The Tigers, who are 2-2 in league play, host NLC opponent Wawasee Thursday evening. The match, which will be a Pink Out event to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer, begins with the JV match at 5:30 p.m.
