Demolition of the city’s old wastewater treatment plant will soon begin after the Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety accepted a bid this morning.

Four bids for the project were opened at the board’s Aug. 16 meeting and a fifth, submitted by Sabre Demolition of New York, was returned because it had not been received in time to be considered. Since then, the company provided a UPS receipt verifying the city did, in fact, receive the bid just under the deadline. Their bid, totaling $825,290, was opened and read at today’s meeting.

The winning bid, however, was awarded to Dore Associates Contracting Inc., Bay City, Mich. The total for the demolition project will be $728,350. The highest bid for the demolition came in at $1,086,000 from Mason Engineering Construction of Fort Wayne.

The entire demolition project will consist of removal and disposal of asbestos and lead paint materials and seeding and mulching the area upon completion.

In other business:

  • Grant money for Operation Pull Over enforcement was approved for the Warsaw Police Department in the amount of $12,000. The total awarded to the county for fiscal year 2014 (Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2014) is $54,000. The funds will be used to pay overtime for officers working OPO.
  • Grant money for the DUI Task Force Indiana program was also approved for the WPD. The city will receive $7,000 from the county’s $25,000 draw to pay officers overtime for select patrols and sobriety checkpoints for fiscal year 2014.
  • A lease for parking facilities was approved with Philip J. and Maxine Harris for the city to utilize the parking lot for downtown parking at Buffalo Street near the east-west railroad tracks. The lease is for two years at a cost of $700 per month.

The next B.O.W. meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in the Warsaw City Hall.
