Local history comes alive Sunday, Sept. 8, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. during the North Webster Cemetery Walk.
Enactors will be stationed throughout the cemetery portraying people who are buried there and telling their stories. You’ll learn what it was like to live in North Webster back then and the colorful characters who lived here. Guided tours will leave from the library every 15 minutes. This is a free event sponsored by the Library’s Local History and Genealogy Center.
The week also starts national Library Card Sign-Up Month, sponsored by the American Library Association, to make students and parents aware that a library card is the most important school supply of all. Students can use their library card to access materials, programs and services to help them excel in school. They can also use their library card from home. Through the library’s website nweb.lib.in.us students can access online homework helps, databases, help with term papers, prepare for SAT and ACT exams, research colleges and scholarships, download e-books and audio books, and even download free music and play games.
A North Webster Community Public Library card is free to anyone who lives in Tippecanoe Township, and you can use your card at many area libraries who also participate in the statewide Evergreen Indiana System. Stop by the Library and sign up for your free card. The American Library Association’s spokesman Luol Deng, NBA all-star of the Chicago Bulls, says the smartest card in his wallet is a library card.
A library card isn’t just for kids. The library offers a wealth of resources for adults as well. Next week, the Adult Services Department will offer a two-part Microsoft Word Class on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. followed on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. In this class, you’ll learn how to use Microsoft Word to create text documents on the computer. The class is free, but because class size is limited, you must sign up in advance at the front desk.
If you feel your smart phone is outsmarting you, sign up for the Android Smart Phone Class on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. This class will show you how to get the most out of your Android smart phone, its features and settings, how to download apps, and more. This class is for Android smart phones only – no iPhones. Because class size is limited, it’s important you sign up in advance at the front desk.
