WARSAW – Warsaw boys tennis coach Rick Orban said his team would be in for a tough test Tuesday night.
The veteran Tiger mentor proved to be correct.
Sparked by a straight set sweep of the three singles spots, South Bend St. Joe topped the host Tigers 4-1 in non-conference play.
Orban, whose team drops to 3-1, said Monday night following a 4-1 win at Mishawaka Marian that the Indians would pose a big challenge to his team.
St. Joe finished 18-3 last season and lost 3-2 to Penn in a regional semifinal match. The Tigers were 12-3 in 2012 and lost to Culver Academies in a regional title tilt.
The trio of Patrick O’Connor, Ryan Jamieson and Michael Wroblewski were all impressive at singles for St. Joe.
O’Connor topped junior Sam Rice 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to lead the way to the win for the Indians. Jamieson stopped senior Kyle Wettschurack 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Wroblewski completed the sweep by topping junior Caleb Ray 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.
The lone point of the match for the host Tigers came from its No. 2 doubles team. Senior Will Petro teamed with junior Nic Jansen for a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sam DeTrempe and Ram Fernandez.
Orban kept his singles lineup intact from Monday night’s win at Marian, but shifted Jansen from No. 1 doubles to No. 2.
The Indians’ fourth point came at No. 1 doubles as the team of Michael Minatel and Leo Romenetz defeated seniors Evan Miller and Nikos Schlitt 6-3, 6-4.
St. Joe also captured the junior varsity match. Winning for the Tigers in JV play were David Homme in singles action. Also victorious were the doubles teams of Drew McCollom and Caleb Ray, Chris Stichter and Wesley Shuler and Jean-Luc Baldwin and Graham Ousley.
Warsaw begins defense of its Northern Lakes Conference title of 2012 by hosting league foe Elkhart Memorial Thursday at 4:45 p.m.
