Turkey Creek Fire Territory Paramedics and New Paris Fire and EMS were called at 4:19 p.m. Friday to what was initially believed to be a head-on crash on U.S. 6 at CR 29, just north of Syracuse.

Upon investigation, authorities said the driver of a Jeep Wrangler, Michael Pope, 65, of Chardon, Ohio, and his passenger, Nadine Pope, 63, were initially transported to IU Health – Goshen by Turkey Creek Fire Territory Paramedics after their vehicle was actually struck by a vehicle that disregarded a stop sign.

According to Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department deputies investigating the crash, Brent Poe, 56, of Goshen, was southbound on CR 29 and failed to stop at the intersection, colliding with the Popes Jeep that was eastbound on U.S. 6. Poe sustained a broken finger in the accident.

Michael Pope complained of head and neck pain and his wife sustained a fracture spine. Nadine Pope was later transferred for Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne for treatment.

Poe was cited for disregarding a stop sign.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by Syracuse Police, Turkey Creek Fire Territory paramedics and New Paris Fire and EMS.
