An accident near Middlebury this morning claimed the life of an Amish bicyclist.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the accident at 4:41 a.m. on U.S. 20 at CR 18 where Elmer E. Miller, 64, of Middlebury, was struck by an SUV as he rode along the highway.

According to the police report, Miller was westbound on U.S. 20 when another westbound vehicle, a Cadillac Escalade SUV driven by 20-year-old Lyle J. Otto of Topeka, left the lane of travel and struck Miller’s bicycle. Miller died at the scene.

Police said no enforcement action has yet been taken, but the accident remains under investigation.
