Imagine you are eternally indebted to someone who saved your life. How much could you tolerate if that person tested you in every way?

The Wagon Wheel Theatre proudly presents that hilarious scenario with the Broadway play, The Nerd, starting Wednesday, July 31, and running through Saturday, Aug. 10.

This comedy is set in Terre Haute, Ind., in 1979, where William Cubbert, an aspiring young architect, lives after serving his country in Vietnam. He has often told his friends about the debt he owes Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met, but whom saved his life.

William is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd,” a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact.

The play ran on Broadway for 441 performances beginning in 1987 starring Mark Hamill and directed by Charles Nelson Reilly.

Season ticket holders may remember the last time the Wagon Wheel Theatre produced this show back in 1997. The lead role of Rick Steadman was then portrayed by one of the Wagon Wheel favorites, Rod Thomas, who has gone on to a hugely successful national career.

Come ready to laugh. The Nerd runs July 31-Aug. 10 only at the Wagon Wheel Theatre. Tickets for tickets range from $16 to $34. Discounts are available for college students and on designated performances for seniors.
