Construction crews are busy today in Leesburg moving an old bank building to make room for a new Freedom Express gas station.

Located along SR 15 in Leesburg, the former Farmer’s State Bank building was lifted from its foundation and is being moved just slightly north on the same lot. The move was necessary to make way for a new Freedom Express gas station that, when completed, will include a larger convenience store and expanded services, including a Noble Roman’s pizza chain.

Demolition on the old gas station is completed and, once the bank building is relocated, construction on the new building is expected to be completed in 60 to 90 days.

The site of the new gas station was once used as a station for the Winona Interurban Railway. On its route from Goshen to Peru, the electric interurban made a stop in Leesburg.

Interurban passenger service ceased in 1934 and the line was used to move freight until 1952. County property records show the building was built in 1920. It was also used as a bus station before bays were added to the north end and the building was converted to a gas station.

The process of relocating the former bank building is expected to be completed by  Wednesday. The moving crew expects some movement either today or tomorrow, however, they must first clear a few trees, a process presently underway, and then move power lines before the building can complete its relocation.
